Indian Motorcycle® has been a trusted and legendary brand in America for the last century. The company was originally named the Hendee Manufacturing Company after its founder George M. The Beginning of the Company

After spending three years making motorcycles, Hendee formed a partnership with Oscar Hedstrom. These two collaborated to create three prototype motorcycles which was the beginning of their 1.75 bhp single-cylinder engine. This was an instant success and sales skyrocketed. In 1902, the first Indian Motorcycle® production models entered the world. Just one year later, an Indian Motorcycle® set the world motorcycle speed record.

Mid-Century Setbacks

During World War I, the United States government bought a large number of the Indian Motorcycle® 1917-18 Powerplus line. This meant there were less products to sell. Many Indian Motorcycle® dealers actually went out of business at this time. The company lost its ground in the market and even lost their title as the #1 motorcycle maker in the country.

Post-War Era

When World War II ended, a group led by Ralph B. Rogers bought a controlling share of Indian Motorcycle®. The company went in a new direction and as a result, discontinued many of the more successful lines opting to build lightweight bikes instead. All product manufacturing had ended by 1953. Indian Motorcycle® went back and forth between controlling groups.

In April 2011, Polaris® Industries announced it would acquire Indian Motorcycle®. In 2013, the company expanded to ten models. Now, the Indian Motorcycle® bikes on the market boast impressive power, speed, agility, style, and more. These qualities are all reminiscent of the original bikes!
